What were you doing before you came to Spirit Studios?
I did a PhD on the electronic music of Delia Derbyshire, developed my work as a creative artist and continued to lecture at various universities.
How did you get into what you teach?
My teaching at Spirit is focussed more on the academic side of writing and researching about music production, which feels like quite an organic progression through academic research into teaching in this area.
Any areas of special interest?
Experimental music.
What’s your proudest career achievement?
Figuring out that I could express myself and make whatever sounds I feel like for myself if I want.
What do you get up to outside of teaching?
Crochet.
What’s your favourite album/artist? and why?
It might be something like Cocteau Twins if I was to think about what I’ve probably listened to the most and absorbed most influence from throughout my life.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
In recent years I saw an unbelievable improvised guitar performance by Fred Frith.
What’s your musical guilty pleasure?
Maybe Serge Gainsbourg?
