Steve Marsden.

Programme Leader

Spending almost 20 years working as as session guitarist, songwriter and producer, Steve is the programme leader for our newest degree course BA (Hons) Popular Music, Songwriting and Performance.

What were you doing before you came to Spirit Studios?

I’ve been working a session guitarist, songwriter and producer for almost 20 years.

How did you get into teaching?

After university, I was playing guitar in band called ‘No Hope In New Jersey’ who ended up getting signed to Atlantic. We released several singles, music videos and recorded an album with Foo Fighters mixer, Chris Sheldon, which was an exciting time for a 23 year old! After that, I begin playing guitar for other artists as a session guitarist as well as getting involved in music education.

Any special areas of interest?

I enjoy building Partscaster guitars! Several of which are now my main gigging instruments!

What’s your proudest career achievement?

Working with a singer-songwriter called Josephine Oniyama! I was her touring guitarist for 5 years and got to travel/tour with her all over Europe, the States, as well as playing an international festival in Harare, Zimbawe!

What do you get up to outside of teaching?

I’m a gigging guitarist with a funk & soul band called, Funked It Up, as well as composing/producing library music for an independent publisher called, SonicTracs.

What’s your favourite album/artist?

This is a difficult question, as there’s a lot of seminal albums that have influenced me… but if I had to choose one, then I probably say Van Halen’s 1984 album, as this album sounds like a band who’d found their musical identity within rock music, Nirvana’s, In Utero and Massive Attacks album, Mezzanine, as this was the first non-guitar album that had a musical and cultural impact on me.

What’s your musical guilty pleasure?

There’s no guilty pleasures! Just good music : )

What are some of your career credits, are there any notable people that you’ve worked with?

When working with Josephine, we were the main support for Paloma Faith. I’ve also played guitar on remixes for Madonna and Jason Derulo, as well as played guitar in JP Cooper’s touring band.

If you have anything released online, where can we find it?

You can check out some of my releases here.

Tell us something people may not know about you?

I once met and chatted to Paul McCartney about songwriting on the way in to play a radio session for Xfm, which was amazing!

I also got to hang out with Snoop Dogg at T In The Park Festival, which was pretty mind-blowing.
