Brandon is a music producer, sound enthusiast and tutor at Spirit, with a passion for synthesis, electronic music, film and creative technology.
What were you doing before you came to Spirit Studios?
I was making and releasing music independently, mostly spending lots of time in my home studio.
Aside from that I worked in a more graphics, media and print background which came in useful in understanding the different processes that help to fully realise a project.
How did you get into Music Production?
I started off recording quite young in around 2006/2007, I primarily used a Tascam Portastudio 424 MKIII. I’d heard of artists like Autechre but never actually heard their music until a leader at the local youth club let me select music from his iPod to play over the PA system.
After that he gave me a copy of Ableton Lite and I became obsessed with creating or recreating what I was hearing every Friday night (Thanks Dave!) From there I built up my knowledge of DAW production whilst wanting to work with hardware, so I just bought what I could cheaply and went from there.
Any special areas of interest?
People here know me as the ‘Synth Guy’ and probably also the ‘Film Guy.’ Both are definitely true but really I’m just interested in learning as much as I can about a lot of subjects.
I find being open to any sort of culture / medium can really help in my own practice and in delivering content across the programmes.
What’s your proudest career achievement?
I’m really happy to be able to help students and share and exchange knowledge, for as much as I can bring to education there are lots of things that I can learn from our students.
It is a real privilege to be part of that exchange and have a hand in helping shape the artists, engineers, producers and beyond of tomorrow.
What do you get up to outside of teaching?
Working on different projects, I’m quite interesting in video along with music production so it’s nice to find ways to combine both of those interests.
Tell us something people may not know about you?
Despite my northern accent I’m originally from the highlands.
