Al explaining how he got into Music Production

What were you doing before you came to Spirit Studios?

I was teaching guitar and trying to teach myself Logic Pro at the same time. Then I joined Spirit Studios as a student and things took off from there!

How did you get into Music Production?

It all began out of a love for making music, producing my own songs and working with other bands and artists. I’m fortunate enough to teach on a wide range of modules at Spirit, covering topics from songwriting to studio recording to creative sampling and synthesis. Teaching music production courses gives me the chance to share my insight and experience with upcoming producers and engineers who will soon be making waves in the music industry.

Any special areas of interest?

Psychedelic guitar pedals, 80s snare sounds and the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

What’s your proudest career achievement?

We recently hosted our first ever Spirit Studios Degree Show which showcased some incredible work from our third year students. To be involved in the development process and finally see all their hard work pay off was a real privilege.

What do you get up to outside of teaching?

I love using non-musical elements in production, such as found sounds and field recordings. When I’m not in the studio you can probably find me roaming around the great outdoors trying to record the sound of an interesting tree.

Teaching gives me the chance to share my insight and experience with upcoming producers and engineers who will soon be making waves in the music industry.

What’s your favourite album/artist?

This answer changes weekly. Right now it’s Lonerism by Tame Impala- the production is insanely colourful and the songwriting is phenomenal.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?

Rage Against The Machine at Leeds Festival 2008. My ears are still ringing.

What’s your musical guilty pleasure?

There’s no such thing! I’ll unashamedly blast C’est La Vie any time of the day.

Tell us something people may not know about you?

I once held the door open for Macy Gray at a jazz club in New Orleans – she was very grateful.
