What were you doing before you came to Spirit Studios?
I’ve been a professional musician, releasing records for the past 13 years – working variously as a composer, producer and performer.
I record and perform on my own as Dialect and also play in the band Ex Easter Island Head. In addition I’ve done a fair bit of live session work. I’m currently playing keyboards and percussion for Ladytron on tour.
How did you get into what you teach?
I was a banging-a-pots-and-pans kind of a toddler so it was written in the stars…
Any areas of special interest?
I’m into building worlds in sound and finding emotion in places you might not expect.
What’s your proudest career achievement?
Recording a Maida Vale session with my old band Outfit was pretty epic, as was doing a live KEXP session recently with Ladytron, nerve wracking!

What do you get up to outside of teaching?
I’m into gardening, birds and pickling things.
Tell us something people may not know about you?
I have taken part in two live pie eating contests, and won both.
Any notable people you may have worked with?
My friend Dave Berger showed me the power of the studio to realise my ideas.
What’s your favourite album/artist? and why?
Impossible to answer but Plux Quba by Nuno Canavarro scratches a great many itches of mine. The abstract and the strangely heartfelt. Perhaps Hejira by Joni Mitchell attends to the rest?
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Dirty Projectors in 2009 rewired my brain.
What’s your musical guilty pleasure?
Turning music off sometimes.
If you have anything released online, where can we find it?
You can find my work at – igetrvng.com/pages/artists/dialect
