If you told me a year ago, I’d be a student and a professional sound tech – I wouldn’t have believed you. Thanks to my placements and going freelance, I’ve worked on huge gigs for Take That, The Killers and The Eagles!
My journey to Spirit Studios
Travelling the States after leaving college made me realise I never wanted a 9 to 5 job. It was music or nothing. I came to an open day and was so excited. Spirit felt real. I knew then, this is where I wanted to be. The flexible self-guided study hours were also a big factor. You can build your industry portfolio alongside your studies.
Studying at Spirit
My course offers a 50/50 split between live and studio work, which is perfect for me. After studying analogue in the first year, we’re now working with digital desks. The industry standard facilities are brilliant. The desks are great for producing music and completing your assignments. Whilst the Charlie Jones Live Venue has everything I need to set up a gig, as if it’s the real world. I like the way doors open up to you as you progress and get stuck into the different modules. Knowing the tech side of audio engineering and working in the studio has really helped me as an artist.

You don’t just sit there listening to someone going through a PowerPoint. That’s not how we do it. Most sessions involve practical work. We get our hands dirty.
Work experience
In your first year, you need to do at least 20 hours of real industry placements – I did 400. I got to set up huge gigs at the AO Arena and Co-op Live. Not many 21-year-olds can say that! To grow my experience, I also volunteer at Manchester Punk Fest and Jazz Festival. And I shadow at Band on the Wall and Academy 2. I’ve already taken big steps into the industry, registering as a self-employed sound engineer. I regularly freelance at gigs and I’m on the roster at Matt & Phred’s. I’m hoping to work with Manchester United TV this year, doing sound from a booth during the games.
A supportive community
It’s such a cool community here. We’re all very different, but connected by a shared love of music. We’re also treated like adults and equals. There’s a real mutual respect between students and tutors. They look out for you, make sure you achieve to the best of your abilities, and recognise and reward your hard work with great opportunities. My live sound tutors all have industry experience. I’ve been taught by the Production Managers of the Ritz and Victoria Warehouse.
An increadible city for music and students
Manchester embraces music at its heart. The music culture is legendary. And the live sound and music scene is unparalleled. There are so many cool treasures to find! I love the jazzy, chilled vibes of Matt & Phred’s. I also like The Blues Kitchen, O2 Ritz and Victoria Warehouse. There are loads of opportunities to make connections that can lead to great things.
Transforming my future
I’ve developed so much personally, professionally and technically. I didn’t expect how far I’ve come. I’ve had lots of personal victories. The biggest change has been my confidence. My communication and networking skills have come on massively.
What next?
Breaking into the music industry isn’t easy. Spirit do a great job of letting you know the reality of your career path and equip you with the skills and knowledge to achieve your goals. The connections I’ve made in Manchester make me want to stay here. This is where I want to build my career. I can write songs, use my tech skills and play guitar, bass, piano and drums. There are lots of possibilities. Going on tour as a musician or sound engineer is my dream. Nothing sounds better than travelling the world and getting paid to do the thing I love.
