Beyond the incredible facilities and wonderful teaching, Spirit feels like a small family that I’m proud to be part of. I had a tough few years before moving to Manchester. But I’ve found myself here. And I’m even more determined to succeed.

My journey to Spirit Studios

Music has always been my passion. So, I went to university to study vocals. But unfortunately, I was diagnosed with Leukaemia, which put a hold on everything. When I recovered, I wanted to go down a different path and learn more about music production. The modules at Spirit really excited me. I came for a tour and was amazed by the facilities. I knew then, this was the place I was supposed to be. When Spirit announced a new songwriting course, it felt like the stars aligned. It was definitely a good choice. I’m very happy here.

Amazing facilities

I had no idea how to use the equipment in a studio. Now it feels very cool to use a mixing desk! Being able to record in the studios outside of lessons is so helpful too. I’ve been collaborating with different students and recording my songs until 10 at night. There’s that much equipment at Spirit Studios you could easily get overwhelmed. So, you’re introduced to it year by year, which is a really good idea. I’ve just learned which microphone suits my voice the best. That’s super-exciting.

There’s a really supportive atmosphere and a great spirit of collaboration with tutors and students.

Wonderful tutors

Having tutors with firsthand experience of the music industry is really valuable. They teach from their own lives and it’s so interesting hearing what they have done in their careers. Rick Jupp from Elbow taught us last semester and he listened to my song. I couldn’t believe it. I feel incredibly supported by my tutors who help me and know me by name. I’m comfortable sharing my songs with them and asking for their feedback. They’ve taught me lots of things I can apply in my career. I now know about record labels, music contracts, and how to record different instruments. It’s fascinating.

I really love Manchester

As I come from the small island of Jersey, I find living in Manchester very different. It’s a friendly, vibrant and fun city with always something going on. But there are also some quieter and more peaceful spots too. I really feel at home here. I live close to the city centre and Spirit Studios, so getting about is easy. Manchester’s incredible music history gives me a sense of opportunity. I’ve been to some big arena gigs but now want to explore smaller venues too.

Starting my career

My songwriting classes have challenged me to think outside of the box and write songs I didn’t think I was capable of. I leave every class with a new idea. Spirit encourage you to be your own artist. I’ve finally found my style and started making music for me. This makes me so happy. I can’t believe how quickly I’ve grown. It’s like – who am I now? With Spirit’s support, I’ve pushed myself to network and it’s really paying off. I’m singing my own songs at open mic nights and with the support of my tutors I’ve sent some of my songs to Sony. I’ve always dreamt of a career in songwriting and performing. Thanks to Spirit, I can now see that path in front of me. It feels achievable. I owe them my future career. I’d love to be like Taylor Swift and make my career as big as it can be.
