Engineering Lab.

A unique facility at Spirit Studios: learn how to wire up a studio, get to grips with soldering and experiment with acoustic treatment and monitoring in our Engineering Lab.

Wide shot of the project studio with amplifiers and pre amps visibile along with other studio equipment.

Our Engineering Lab will give you a greater understanding of signal flow, giving you the knowledge and confidence to workaround technical issues that can arise when running a studio session.

We want you to be able to create a mental picture of the signal path surrounding any issue or fault you encounter and be able to quickly identify possible resolutions or workarounds to keep your session running, ideally without any artists or other guests noticing.

You’re free to open up the outboard rack and console furniture, unplug all of the cables and then put the studio back together again. Once you’ve wired up the studio, you can then perform a line check to ensure all connections have been made correctly and all equipment is working. See if you can then solve any issues that have been picked up by the line check, perhaps by utilising one of the available soldering irons.

The acoustic treatment is also customisable. You can position absorbers, diffusers and bass traps however you like. Then analyse the room using Room EQ Wizard and a calibration mic before making any adjustments to acoustic treatment, speaker position and any speaker trim functions available to create a good performing environment.

The skills you can learn from this facility will make you a better studio engineer, give you the knowledge to create your own studio and even explore the more technical roles and opportunities available in the audio industry.
