Jack Broom Self Portrait

After studying Music Business at Spirit Studios, Jack Broom has spent more than 15 years helping electronic music artists build sustainable careers. Working across artist management, PR, digital marketing, branding and artist development, he has supported artists with everything from record label signings and media campaigns to major bookings and long-term career strategy.

Jack founded Elevate to provide artists. with the guidance and education he felt was missing when he first entered the industry. Today he works directly with artists, managers and agents through coaching, PR campaigns, career development and industry education, as well as working in Business Development for Trackstar, publishing industry insights on the electronic music landscape, including trends, culture, technology, and global touring.

We caught up with Jack to discuss his journey into the music industry, the lessons he’s learned from working behind the scenes, and the advice he would give to students looking to build successful careers in music.

Could you tell us abit about your current role and the work you do through Elevate?

I am currently the Founder Elevate Artists as well as this I offer Electronic Music Career Coaching, US Visa PR and I am an Industry Educator.

What first inspired you to pursue a career in the music industry, and what made you choose to study Music Business at Spirit Studios?

I fell into it by chance during my first spell at Uni of Liverpool, going out to raves and instantly fell in love with the music and the community. I was spending so much time in and around the culture and industry that it made sense to find a way to give back.

The chance to study at Spirit Studios came up when I was studying on a private course at SEM with Tony Rigg, I then decided to progress my learning on to Spirit to finish my degree in Music Business & Creative Industries. I chose the course because it was geared towards practical learning either to go and work for someone else in the industry or continue your business learning for your own ventures.

Looking back, what did you enjoy most about your time studying with us?

I loved the community aspect of learning with others and supporting one another on our projects.

The tutors were always very supportive and on-hand to encourage us with our studies.

You’ve spent over 15 years working across artist management, PR, marketing and artist development. How has your career evolved since graduating to where you are today?

Well the biggest aspect is social media and technological advances – we’ve seen great strides forward which now makes pursuing a career in creative industries more accessible than ever, which for me is a win.

I have since moved into education (in 2025) as my original goal was to help as many people who want to pursue a career in music because as a manager I was helping a small pool of artists who don’t really need my help or support because their careers are sustaining themselves. This way I can help more artists or those wanting to pursue a career in music as an industry professional to realise their goal to work in the music industry full-time.

Throughout your career, you’ve helped artists secure label signings, media coverage and major bookings. Which part of the process do you enjoy the most?

Helping to support artists achieve their goals, being their support and sounding board.

Using my experience to help them mentally and keep them grounded but focused in making their dreams become reality.

You founded Elevate to help artists better understand the industry. What inspired you to start the company, and what problems are you hoping to solve?

The main issue is lack of transparency. Far too many are trying to take advantage of people’s passion and desire to succeed. We need more clarity and education for artists and those joining the industry as there are a lot of smoke and mirrors from those who have been in the industry for years.

My goal is to be the bigger brother who helps artists manage themselves.and build their own business and/or career in music whilst also teaching them how to be savvy and avoid some of the pitfalls I and many others encountered early on in their careers.

In your experience, what are some of the biggest mistakes emerging artists make when trying to build their careers?

The main one is not reading contracts and rushing into deals without asking questions or not asking for advice early on.

Follow your gut, if something feels a bit off, your instinct is there for a reason, follow it.

How important is branding, storytelling and marketing in today’s music industry compared to the music itself?

The music always comes first as that’s your product which you need to get spot on but it also comes in tandem with storytelling as ultimately you need to build an audience, how do you do that?

You need to connect with them, tell them your story. How did this all come about, what inspires you, what are the experiences that shaped where you are. Just sharing the music when it’s finished saying “go buy this” isn’t enough, it’s not compelling enough for a stranger to go and follow you instantly.

Given the level of accessibility now, everyone is a creator these days so you need to stand out by being unapologetically you, we’re all unique but there are things that crossover in our personalities and experiences that connect and bond us with other humans.

What has been your biggest career highlight or proudest achievement so far?

Tough to pinpoint one thing but I think if I had to say – it’s been working with an excess of 100+ artists helping them all achieve goals whether that’s signing to a dream label, securing a dream DJ booking, building their own music businesses. This is what has really meant the most to me.

What advice would you give to Spirit students hoping to build careers in the music business industry?

If you can turn up consistently, work hard, stay focused, be curious and stay humble then you’ll achieve your goals in a sustainable and ethical way.
