John Breakell 1953-2024.

25 April, 2024

John Breakell and Bill Wyman

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our founder and CEO John Breakell earlier this week, on the 23 April 2024. John is survived by his wife Nui and his son JJ. The thoughts of everyone at Spirit are with them at this time.

John founded Spirit Studios way back in 1980 and has remained at the heart of the company since.

One of six children, John was born in Preston in 1953. After spending a couple of years in Australia in his early 20s, he returned to the North West and founded a small rehearsal room and studio in Manchester’s Northern Quarter by the name ‘Spirit Studios’. John, and Spirit very quickly became embedded in Manchester’s flourishing music scene, with local musicians and up-and-coming bands such as The Smiths and The Stone Roses frequenting the studios. It was a place where like minded music lovers could meet and be creative and collaborate. A place with real community spirit.

As John’s connections to the music industry grew, he had the visionary idea to form the UK’s first school dedicated to Sound Engineering and Music Production, helping people interested in the industry follow their passions and forge their careers. Something he continued to oversee for over 40 years.

John, you were an incredible person, and we will continue your legacy. You’ll be greatly missed.
